Red lights come and go Holding back my fits of passion Driving down a no through road Looking for a place to stay I've been feeling like I owe You the fruits of my conviction You're the apple of my eye From the skin down to the core Now he tosses to a fro In the freedom of his fiction It was in a dream he owned Now he's woken up alone Now there's no room for him to grow That's the reason for his extinction But the seeds he's sown will grow They will turn away no more Come and go It's a feeling that I know I want to make the cloudy clear In the know Like a hand on a hot stove I want it cold And just let go No through road

Bitter Pills 03:51
Light a candle for the ones who thought That we’d be bound by the law And the ones who thought That they would not be tortured anymore Light a candle for the children who are learning how to hate For the women and the men, it’s all too late Fly a flag for the ones who stayed To greet the newcomers And the ones who tried To stand against the King’s gunners Fly a flag for the children of the dispossessed, who still Hold their heads high while swallowing such bitter pills Let us all rejoice We built this land On the blood of the people who were here when it began And we have a choice Will we build our future On the blood of the people who are reaching for our hand? Light a candle for the ones who thought That they would not be tortured any more And the ones who fought For justice under occupiers’ law Light a candle for the children of the brutalised Who will be our leaders in the future Bitter pills

America 03:24
Oh, Americans Clinging to their freedom like a lollipop Getting high on the sugar while their teeth just rot How did it begin? and tell me when will it stop? Oh, Americans Oh, Americans Calling on the government to leave ’em alone Regulating vaginas ’til the cows come home Where did it come from? and how far will they go? Oh, Americans For every Woody Guthrie There’s a dozen Joe McCarthys You silence all your Martin Luther Kings You turn away from greatness For the shallowest embraces And never stop to think about For whom the bell rings It rings for you, America Your voice has gotten louder and your stick’s still big You’re blowing down the houses of the little pigs That hole’ll just get deeper for as long as you dig Oh, America

I’ll be waiting for her Until the end of my time I’ve been through trees and leaves and fauna For my dying bride I’ll settle the score And I’ll end it all I’ve been waiting for her I’ll sit in the corner In repent for my crimes And then I’ll fill a glass of water That will turn into wine I’ll keep asking for more And I’ll get it all I’ve been waiting for her I’ll toe the line And I’ll wait for fish to bite I’ll bide my time In the sea of love Crashing through waves Floating above
5.
One foot in the bedroom One foot in the hall You keep changing your shoes One hand on the doorknob One hand on my heart I don’t know which one to choose Either way, I’m gonna lose One eye on the skin and One eye on the smile It could vanish any time One ear on the words and One ear on the sound I don’t know how much is mine Oh I walk the finest line I never knew I couldn’t say I look at you You’ll never stay I always knew, one day… …in Milano, one day in Iran You keep going away One night in Paris one night in Saigon And you sleep all fucking day And I’ll never be okay And there’s nothing I can say Such a fine line Pleasure and pain
6.
I’m blowing kisses to my new found friend When she goes home I still miss her It’s not an issue that she likes other men She blows my nose with her tissue She throws all my worries from the front seat to the back And we drive to places never cautious if we go off track And she’ll run right into trouble without too much care Now I’m doing what I never thought I’d dare do I do the weeding while she just does the lawn We take in turns with the dishes Blows out the candles with just one single blow And she won’t tell me her wishes We get together when we finish all our work Not noticing what other people do When going gets too tough I pull on her black hair And she screams and yells until everything is cool Went to the river and I pushed her right in And she scared off all the fishes Look through the window of my school teacher’s house He’s in the bath with his missus She throws all my worries from the front seat to the back And we drive to places never cautious if we go off track And she’ll run right into trouble without too much care Now I’m doing what I never thought I’d dare do

Mouse Room Girl, don’t you love me? Cause you know I love you so Once I hold you, I won’t want to let you go Mouse Room Girl, don’t you need me? ’Cause you know I need you now Mouse Room Girl, got to be with you somehow Mouse Room Girl I just have to let you know When I hold you, I don’t want to let you go Mouse Room Girl, how I need you And you know I need you now Mouse Room Girl, got to be with you somehow Mouse Room Girl, how I love you You’re the girl who won my heart When I’m with you, I don’t want to be apart. Mouse Room Girl I just have to let you know When I hold you, I don’t want to let you go Just want to let you know Don’t want to let you go

Crazy 03:14
Are you crazy enough for me? If you’re fucked in the head Then you and I should get together Twist my heart through your neurosis Let’s create some symbiosis Let me clutch your thorny roses: Are you crazy enough for me? Are you callous enough for me? Will you carry me high Then slip me though your fingers? Tell me that I am the one Tease my sanity undone Put a cloud before the sun: Are you crazy enough for me? If you subscribe to loving kindness Then leave me alone If you know how to love and be loved Then I don’t give a damn Are you ruthless enough for me? If your kindness is cruel Then you and I should make some music Let me think that I have made it Take my peace and then unbraid it Wash my colour ’til you fade it: Are you crazy enough for me? If you could really make me happy Leave me alone
9.
Luther 03:41
My son Luther Is so far away from you Gone further Than he ever wanted to You’re his sister How could you be so cruel To your brother Luther I’m an intruder But shouldn’t you be true I can’t rule you And I’ve never wanted to I’m bothered I don’t know what to do Your brother Luther He’s been gone away for days On the shelf are razor blades Fighting in my family’s blood While I look down from above

Lino 05:20
Wiping up all the Milo I spilt on the lino on the kitchen floor When you go and leave me alone It tends to make Everything structured and slow I can’t find true love, but I can be true I can find reasons for being with you But these doubts just won’t let me go I feel there’s something you know that I don’t So why don’t you give me a go? Eyelashes blink with no clothes It makes you look kind of like Marilyn Monroe With six toes and I can’t find true love, but I can be true I can find reasons for being with you Psycho semantics and pro-active rules But these doubts just won’t let me go Newspapers talk in a terrible tone Chew up and spit out the bone We read and believe what we watch on the screen We don’t have to leave the home Wiping up all the Milo I spilt on the lino on the kitchen floor I can’t find true love, but I can be true I can find reasons for being with you Psycho semantics and pro-active rules I can find reasons for being with you But these doubts just won’t let me go

Waiting for someone to give you a second chance We’re all waiting for the seventh day You have mail, someone has always loved you, and They will always love you Even after your demise You Have Mail Tasting salt water from beneath the earth It’s been there since before your birth, and will Be there after you die Placing things you collect along the way On display where they gather dust & rust In the sun and rain You Have Mail Playing the game with you is always the same Now you want me to play again So you invite me over Raining acid rain on the stumps of trees Won’t you cut one down for me if you please What about those killer bees? Waning moon shines before it can wax Murderer picks up her axe… And chops wood for winter Weeping eyes from thick black smoke I think I’m about to choke As the flames consume me You Have Mail
12.
I think that I’m in love with you And I feel it every hour I think that you’ve been using me And I think you’ve got the power You’ve got my heart a-pumpin’ And it’s going to my head And I feel my brain is racing At a million miles an hour I dreamed that we were making love In a simple laid out bed You offered me forgiveness And I offered you a flower I’m catching myself watching you Through your window late at night And I feel my brain is racing At a million miles an hour You’ve got my brain a-racing now At a million miles an hour Valium and malted milk Can soothe a troubled mind I left you with a glass of it But now it’s going sour I think that you’re the only truth In a world that full of lies And I feel my brain is racing At a million miles an hour You’ve got my brain a-racing now At a million miles an hour Feel my brain is racing At a million miles an hour

There must be a dozen ways to fall out of the sky There must be a dozen ways to hit the ground and die Number one: don’t even try (down you go) Number two: you just screw it up and die Number three: clip the trees and spin into the ground below Number four: just want more, just want more There must be a dozen ways to fall out of the sky There must be a dozen ways to hit the ground and die Number five: stop believing (down you go) Number six: just stop breathing (now you know) Number seven: think of everything but what you’re doing Number eight: concentrate, concentrate! Crash into the mountains, fly into the pelicans Fall asleep: no-one knows who you are There must be a dozen ways to fall out of the sky Number nine: bring your burdens with you (down you go) Number ten: just pretend you know it all Number eleven: try for heaven, look into the face of god Number twelve: suit yourself, suit yourself There must be a dozen ways to fall out of the sky

about

'Finally, a friendly shore' is an evolution of the Phosphenes' sound, with a wider stylistic range and more nuanced arrangements. Taking the listener down dead-end streets, across the Pacific and back, through medical research facilities and across sticky kitchen floors to island prisons and secret bathtubs, it’s an explosion of different genres and diverse instrumentation that nevertheless has a distinct coherence and thematic consistency.

about

The Phosphenes Melbourne, Australia

The Phosphenes create imperfect three-minute pop songs from a standard dysfunctional rock line-up (with added harmonica for your convenience) that - replete with catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms, armed with poignant and quirky humour, and dripping in vocal harmonies - stick in your head and get you out of your chair. ... more
